Yesterday was quite a day. In addition to being absolutely beautiful (after a much needed break in record rain fall), the city was alive with events surrounding the 100 year anniversary of the Great Quake & Fire
. We reported on somber commemorations, stories of survival, the words of politicians and scientists, and celebrations of resilience with some rather shaky video reports (hey, what do you want from a cell phone?). In the end, will a single day's focus move people to action, to prepare? We hope so.
Yesterday, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom
reported that he was embarrassed to learn that only 10% of San Francisco residents are believed to be prepared for a disaster for the first 72 hours
. Based on Katrina, you need to expect to be on your own for at least 3 days, and many at the conference
suggested 5. Newsom said "Katrina woke everybody up, or has it? Again, I ask, or has it?...Ultimately, the bill comes due." California "the govenator" Arnold Schwarzenegger
, put it succinctly: "Those who fail to plan, plan to fail" (BTW, this is also said to be an old military adage
).
We'll be spending much of the time remaining on this blog on preparedness. We hope to give you practical information that you can use. Let's keep the momentum going! Don't forget this anniversary. Get ready.
