I love Heather Clancy's July 6, 2010, article on ZDNet, "Virtualization core to Wells Fargo green IT initiative
," and wanted to share it with you. She does a good job of describing our virtualization efforts.
What's virtualization? Well, essentially, it means going from using multiple computers at partial capacity to using fewer at fuller capacity. Virtualization leads to energy savings, which lead to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, which lead to cleaner air, which is good for us all! It's an important part of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction efforts.
If you'd like to learn about our other GHG efforts, please let us know! We're happy to share what we're doing. At the same time, we're eager to learn. If you have ideas for us, please send them our way!

I am interested to know what else you are doing, and who has been tasked with managing all of the data that is being collected and generated as a result of your efforts. Additionally, I was wondering who is responsible for WF's sustainability strategy. I love the blog...keep up the great work!

I applaud WF's "Greening of IT", but virtualization technology isn't at it's core a Green IT Strategy, but rather a cost savings strategy the reduces the amount of hardware, software, and people required to maintain these systems. Nevertheless, I think that it is great what you have done thus far...now the big challenge is moving the data centers to areas that have renewable power readily available for your use!

@Jonathan, I love the fact that many of our ghg initiatives have multiple business benefits! As you point out, server virtualization helps us avoid costs as well as reach our goal of reducing our ghg emissions 20% by 2018. Others, like relocating data centers, can be costly and require greater examination. Stephanie
