We've told you before about GRID Alternatives
and the amazing work that they do to provide solar energy to low income home owners. We've also told you about a few of our volunteer projects to help install solar systems throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
Today we are celebrating the completion of not one, not two, but three amazing Wells Fargo Volunteer days with GRID. In late 2011, we had the opportunity to help install solar systems in San Francisco, L.A., and the Inland Empire. Here are just a few of the fun moments we captured with our volunteer crew.
And, most importantly, a quick look at our impact in all three areas.
SF Bay Area Solarthon
Held on Saturday, September 10, the 6th annual Bay Area Solarthon succeeded in installing 13 solar electric systems for families living in the Bayview District. According to GRID's calculations, these combined systems will provide approximately 1.7 million kW of clean energy while saving over $290,000 and preventing over 977 tons of greenhouse gas emissions.1 GRID partnered with Swords to Plowshares
to assist with the installation, which means that this one-day event also helped to train green collar job seekers by providing hands on experience for students transitioning from military service to civilian careers
LA Solarthon
In early November, the L.A. team installed 10 solar systems on deserving family homes, helping to prevent over 700 tons of greenhouse gas emissions and save almost $220,000 in energy bills over the lifetime of the systems.2
Later in November, our San Bernardino Green Team partnered with GRID to install a 3.1 kW solar system on a new Habitat for Humanity Riverside home. The team worked alongside GRID staff and job training volunteers. Just like San Francisco, the L.A. and Inland Empire Builds also provided hands-on experience for job seekers looking to move to the solar industry.
