Okay, indulge me on this one post. After spending weeks upon weeks looking at photographs of the quake of '06, I found these on the UC Berkeley Bancroft Library's excellent online archive
. Will someone please tell me: WHY ARE ALL THESE WOMEN FASHIONABLY DRESSED?!?
I mean, I have a hard enough time figuring out what to wear every waking, non-earthquake-filled day of my life, and these ladies look like they're shilling schmattes for
Vivienne Westwood
in the midst of a catastrophe? I thought
water was a problem
. I thought
electric power lines were broken
. Those clothes are IMMACULATE! Oh, well, maybe this poor woman had to do it for them.
Maybe they saved their best clothes from the earthquake/fire by wearing them.
Fantastic pictures. Good work for pointing this out. They do look like old Vivienne Westwoods (as your enlightening link shows). I guess just because the city's dying doesn't mean you shouldn't be dressed to kill.
Thanks for all your comments. Come to think of it, the
washerwoman's outfit is very Martin Margiela, too.
