February is a special month. I mean, I know there's Valentine's Day and all, but did you know that this is the month we honor African American heritage? It's Black History Month
, and it was all started in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson! ![]()
We're talking about all the influential historical leaders and figures who made our world what it is today. We even inaugurated our first African American president
— we are living history!
Ok...so let's hop on that magic school bus for a tiny history trip, yea?
One of my favorite events I learned about is Frederick Douglass becoming the very first African-American nominated to be a Vice Presidential candidate in 1872. He ran with Victoria Woodhull
, the first woman to run for President of the United States. That campaign was a huge historical milestone in Black (and Women's) history — look how far we've come!
Then there's George Washington Carver
— an agricultural genius who won the Spingarn Medal
in 1923. And of course, Dr. Martin Luther King, whose "I Have A Dream" speech still lives in all of us today. I mean, he has a national holiday dedicated to him!
Oh! And we can't forget sports...how about Jackie Robinson?
In 1947 he became the first African American player in Major League Baseball's modern era!
That's just a few of the tons of African Americans to celebrate and honor! There are so many more and so much more to learn — and this month is a just a tiny reminder of the rich history that's made our country what it is today.
